The construction of the mosque is timed to coincide with the 1100th anniversary of the adoption of Islam in Russia. The new building should become a symbol of religion in the country and its modern sign. This status determined the architectural concept - the prototype of the future mosque was the Kaaba, the main Muslim shrine.
The mosque stands on the water, connecting to the banks of the Volga with a public square. The building is a black cube with a prayer hall in the center. The traditional shape of the dome for the mosque refers to the arrangement of worshipers around the Kaaba. The space around the perimeter is occupied by the Museum of Islamic History. The exhibition frames the hall, maintaining a connection with the center of the mosque.
The appearance of the building reflects a combination of secular and religious, open and at the same time sacred. The solution for the facades develops this idea: the stone blocks are shifted in such a way that gaps are formed in the masonry. So the dome of the hall can be seen from a great distance and from ships sailing along the river.
The scale of the mosque is emphasized by the only minaret, which houses an observation deck. The location on the water reveals the meaning of the word: “minaret” translated from Arabic means “lighthouse”. It symbolizes a spiritual landmark for believers and at the same time is a landmark in the city.
